Elemental Magick: Become Like Water, My Friend

The Water Element. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
This week for elemental magick, we will uncover more about my favorite element: Water. Since I was a child, I always had an affinity for water. Growing up, I lived less than a half hour from the beach in my home state of California. I spent a lot of time on the shore, around the piers and out in the ocean. Moving to Colorado was tough on me because of the lack of ocean. Friends tried taking me to reservoirs and I, ashamedly mind you, felt like they were an inferior replacement for the sea. Eventually, as I became older and wiser, I came to love everything in Colorado despite my longing for the beach.
Still, I have a love for all things water. I love the rain, I love watching the snow fall, I absolutely adore fog and I enjoy being close to rivers and waterfalls. This year I plan on visiting all of the waterfalls in Colorado just to be near the water element. Water is in my nature. My favorite quote that I try adhering to daily even uses water in its explanation.
Bruce Lee said “You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water, my friend.”
My own insight and meditation on this element has given me much time to think about my personality and how I wish to be like water. I often see myself as a river flowing naturally, magnetically, toward its destiny. Whatever obstacle that gets in my way, I pass around, flow through or push past. Whatever limits are placed on me; I wait patiently until I gain enough momentum to overcome them. Nothing holds me back from my goals. I am not so rigid, however, that I move singularly in one direction. I have many winding paths and some new paths that I need to forge through. I give freely to those who need me and I do my best nourish and transform everything in my wake.
Aside from what I’ve meditated on about water, my studies have also taught me that to the Green magician, water holds the key to the realm of dreams, fantasies, our intuition and feelings. Water also governs the element of the West and can be represented by a chalice or bowl of water when placed upon an altar. As a druid, water is one of the most important elements because it helps us to prepare food, it nourishes the land and it’s vital for every living thing in the land, sea and air. Druids and Green witches respect every body of water, whether it’s a puddle of the ocean.
With such an important element at play, I’m excited to do more digging and refresh my memory and spirit on the water element.
